Singing Gorilla Projects funds and facilitates community based projects in Uganda.
Singing Gorilla Projects (SGP) facilitate and fund community based projects in remote parts of Uganda that improve the welfare of communities and enriches the lives of individuals.
The project works is undertaken in the Kisoro District and the Wasiko District, Uganda.
Much of the Kisoro District project work is done mostly (but not exclusively) in and around the Nteko ridge and the village of Nkuringo and town of Rubuguri, in the Nyabwishenya and Kirundo sub counties respectively. SGP have set up a music school, installed over 50 water tanks to harvest rain water, sponsored children to continue their schooling and has developed the Nkuringo Green Hill Health Clinic to provide medical care and services for the community, delivered by the community.
SGP works closely with the local communities who co-ordinate the work, mobilise the community to get involved and provide leadership and decision making.
Much of the project work is done in and around the Nteko ridge, a ridge that rise up from the town of Kisoro and Lake Mutanda in the south to the DR Congo border in the north east. At the highest point of the ridge is the village of Nkuringo.
Nkuringo is a village with a vibrant trading centre and lodges for tourists. The village overlooks the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the last remaining refuge of the endangered mountain gorilla, and the rolling hills of south west Uganda, that lead to the mighty Virunga volcanos on the Rwanda, DR Congo border.
It is a place of immense beauty and fragilty, a truly special place on Earth.
Nkuringo is in a sub-county called Nyabweishenya. The population of the area is 27,000. With an annual population growth of 3.2% per year, the population is expected to triple by 2050. This growth in the population will present significant challenges to Uganda. Whichever way you look at it, this is a really scary statistic on many fronts, from the provision of health services, education, to economic development and food production, not least the effect on the environment.
